CVE-2023-29516
Overview
This vulnerability is a code injection flaw caused by improper escaping of user-controllable input in the "Cancel and return to page" button within the XWiki Platform's XWiki.AttachmentSelector component. The flaw allows injection of arbitrary Groovy, Python, or Velocity code due to insufficient sanitization of input data processed by the runtime services of the wiki platform. The affected feature is the default-installed page handling attachment selection and navigation actions.
Vulnerability Description
XWiki Platform is a generic wiki platform offering runtime services for applications built on top of it. Any user with view rights on `XWiki.AttachmentSelector` can execute arbitrary Groovy, Python or Velocity code in XWiki leading to full access to the XWiki installation. The root cause is improper escaping in the "Cancel and return to page" button. This page is installed by default. This vulnerability has been patched in XWiki 15.0-rc-1, 14.10.1, 14.4.8, and 13.10.11. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.
Impact
An attacker with authenticated view access can execute arbitrary code on the XWiki server, achieving full control over the installation. This includes the ability to read, modify, or delete content and potentially compromise the underlying system. The exploit requires no user interaction beyond possessing view rights, and network access to the affected service is necessary. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:L) confirms remote network exploitation with low complexity and no user interaction, resulting in complete confidentiality, integrity, and availability compromise.
Solution
Remediation requires upgrading XWiki Platform to versions 15.0-rc-1, 14.10.1, 14.4.8, or 13.10.11 or later, as detailed in the GitHub security advisory GHSA-3989-4c6x-725f and JIRA issue XWIKI-20275. The vendor's advisory and commit aca1d677c58563bbe6e35c9e1c29fd8b12ebb996 provide the patch details. No workarounds are available; therefore, timely application of these updates is mandatory to mitigate the vulnerability.
EPSS vs KEV Prediction — Evolution (30 days)
Full Analysis
The vulnerability in the XWiki Platform arises from improper input handling in the "Cancel and return to page" button, which allows users with view rights to execute arbitrary code in Groovy, Python, or Velocity. This flaw is particularly concerning because it is installed by default, making it accessible to a wide range of users without any special permissions. The lack of adequate input sanitization means that an attacker can manipulate the input to inject malicious code, leading to unauthorized access and control over the XWiki installation. This vulnerability highlights the critical importance of secure coding practices, especially in platforms that serve as the backbone for applications and services.
Attack vectors for this vulnerability are primarily focused on social engineering and user exploitation. An attacker could craft a malicious link or document that, when accessed by a user with view rights, triggers the execution of arbitrary code. For instance, an attacker could embed this link in a phishing email or a compromised web page, enticing users to click on it. Once the code is executed, the attacker gains full access to the XWiki environment, potentially allowing them to manipulate data, extract sensitive information, or even pivot to other systems within the network. The ease of exploitation, combined with the default installation of the vulnerable component, significantly increases the risk of successful attacks.
The real-world impact of this vulnerability can be severe, particularly for organizations that rely on the XWiki Platform for documentation, collaboration, or knowledge management. Successful exploitation could lead to data breaches, loss of intellectual property, and reputational damage. Furthermore, the ability to execute arbitrary code could allow attackers to deploy malware or ransomware within the organization's infrastructure, leading to operational disruptions and financial losses. The business risk is compounded by the potential for regulatory penalties if sensitive data is compromised, particularly in industries subject to data protection regulations.
To detect and mitigate this vulnerability, organizations should prioritize updating their XWiki installations to the patched versions. Regular patch management is essential to ensure that all components of the software are up to date and secure. Additionally, organizations should implement strict access controls to limit the number of users with view rights, thereby reducing the attack surface. Monitoring and logging user activity can also help in detecting suspicious behavior that may indicate an attempted exploitation of the vulnerability. Finally, conducting regular security assessments and code reviews can help identify similar vulnerabilities in custom extensions or configurations of the XWiki Platform.
In conclusion, the vulnerability in the XWiki Platform underscores the critical need for robust security practices in software development and deployment. Organizations must remain vigilant in their security posture, ensuring that they are not only applying patches but also actively managing user permissions and monitoring for unusual activity. By adopting a proactive approach to cybersecurity, organizations can mitigate the risks associated with such vulnerabilities and protect their assets from potential exploitation.
CSURFACE threat intelligence has detected a significant increase in the Exploit Prediction Scoring System (EPSS) score for CVE-2023-29516, rising by nearly 70% to place it in the 0.96th percentile. This upward shift signals a growing likelihood of exploitation attempts in the near term, despite no new proof-of-concept exploits or active campaigns being identified by our telemetry. The elevated EPSS score reflects increased interest or potential weaponization efforts within attacker communities, which could translate into a heightened risk environment for organizations using affected versions of the XWiki Platform. Defenders should recognize that this change indicates a more imminent threat posture, warranting closer monitoring of relevant attack vectors and user activity related to XWiki attachments. While the absence of confirmed exploitation events tempers immediate alarm, the marked rise in predictive scoring underscores the necessity for vigilance as adversaries may be preparing to leverage this vulnerability more aggressively.
