CVE-2023-29212
Overview
This vulnerability is a code injection flaw rooted in improper escaping of included pages within the included documents edit panel of XWiki Commons libraries. The affected component improperly handles user-supplied content when rendering or processing included documents, enabling execution of arbitrary Groovy, Python, or Velocity code. The flaw arises from insufficient sanitization and validation of input in the page inclusion mechanism, which is common to multiple top-level XWiki projects.
Vulnerability Description
XWiki Commons are technical libraries common to several other top level XWiki projects. Any user with edit rights can execute arbitrary Groovy, Python or Velocity code in XWiki leading to full access to the XWiki installation. The root cause is improper escaping of the included pages in the included documents edit panel. The problem has been patched on XWiki 14.4.7, and 14.10.
Impact
An attacker with edit rights can execute arbitrary code on the XWiki server, resulting in full compromise of the installation including data access and system control. The vulnerability requires authentication with edit privileges (PR:L) but no user interaction beyond that. Exploitation can lead to complete confidentiality, integrity, and availability loss (C:H/I:H/A:H) as per the CVSS vector. This enables attackers to deploy malicious payloads, manipulate or exfiltrate data, and disrupt services within the affected environment.
Solution
Apply the vendor-provided patches available in XWiki platform versions 14.4.7 and 14.10 or later to remediate this vulnerability. Detailed patch instructions and advisory information are provided in the XWiki security advisory GHSA-c5f4-p5wv-2475 at https://github.com/xwiki/xwiki-platform/security/advisories/GHSA-c5f4-p5wv-2475. Users should update affected deployments promptly to these versions to eliminate the improper escaping vulnerability in the included documents edit panel.

Full Analysis
The vulnerability in XWiki Commons arises from improper handling of user input, specifically concerning the escaping of included pages within the document edit panel. This flaw allows users with edit rights to execute arbitrary code written in Groovy, Python, or Velocity. The root cause can be traced back to insufficient validation and sanitization processes, which fail to prevent the execution of potentially harmful scripts embedded within the content. As a result, an attacker can manipulate the system to execute malicious code, leading to unauthorized access and control over the entire XWiki installation. The severity of this vulnerability is underscored by its high CVSS score of 8.8, indicating a critical risk that must be addressed promptly.
Attack vectors for this vulnerability are primarily centered around users with edit permissions. An attacker could leverage their legitimate access to insert malicious code into documents, which would then be executed by the server when the document is processed. This could occur in various scenarios, such as when an unsuspecting user views the compromised document or when the server processes the document for rendering. The exploitation could lead to a range of malicious activities, including data exfiltration, unauthorized modifications to the XWiki content, or even complete takeover of the server environment, depending on the privileges of the compromised account.
The real-world impact of this vulnerability is significant, particularly for organizations that rely on XWiki for collaborative documentation and knowledge management. The ability to execute arbitrary code poses a severe threat to the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of sensitive information stored within the XWiki instance. Businesses could face reputational damage, loss of customer trust, and potential legal ramifications if sensitive data is compromised. Additionally, the operational disruption caused by an attack could lead to financial losses, especially if recovery efforts are required to restore the system to a secure state.
To detect and mitigate this vulnerability, organizations should implement a multi-faceted approach. Regularly updating to the latest patched versions of XWiki is crucial, as the developers have addressed this issue in versions 14.4.7 and 14.10. Organizations should also conduct thorough security audits and code reviews to identify any instances of improper input handling within their custom XWiki implementations. Employing web application firewalls (WAFs) can help filter out malicious requests and provide an additional layer of protection against exploitation attempts. Furthermore, restricting edit permissions to trusted users and implementing role-based access controls can significantly reduce the attack surface and limit the potential for exploitation.
In conclusion, the vulnerability in XWiki Commons presents a serious threat to organizations utilizing this platform. The combination of improper input handling and the potential for arbitrary code execution creates a critical risk that can have far-reaching consequences. By understanding the technical details, attack vectors, and real-world implications, organizations can take proactive steps to mitigate the risks associated with this vulnerability and safeguard their systems against exploitation. Regular updates, security audits, and stringent access controls are essential components of a robust cybersecurity strategy that can effectively address this and similar vulnerabilities in the future.
