CVE-2023-29210
Overview
This vulnerability is a code injection flaw caused by improper escaping of user-supplied input within notification preference macros in XWiki Commons. Specifically, the user parameter in these macros, which are embedded in user profiles, fails to sanitize Groovy, Python, or Velocity code. This insecure handling enables execution of arbitrary code through the notification filters feature, affecting the core XWiki Commons libraries utilized across multiple XWiki projects.
Vulnerability Description
XWiki Commons are technical libraries common to several other top level XWiki projects. Any user with view rights on commonly accessible documents including the notification preferences macros can execute arbitrary Groovy, Python or Velocity code in XWiki leading to full access to the XWiki installation. The root cause is improper escaping of the user parameter of the macro that provide the notification filters. These macros are used in the user profiles and thus installed by default in XWiki. The vulnerability has been patched in XWiki 13.10.11, 14.4.7 and 14.10.
Impact
An attacker with at least view permissions on documents containing the vulnerable macros can execute arbitrary code remotely without user interaction. This leads to full compromise of the XWiki installation, including unauthorized access to data and potential control over the server environment. The vulnerability requires low privileges (PR:L) and no user interaction (UI:N), with network attack vector (AV:N), resulting in complete confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact as indicated by the CVSS vector.
Solution
To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade xwiki-platform to versions 13.10.11, 14.4.7, or 14.10 or later as specified in the official XWiki security advisory GHSA-p9mj-v5mf-m82x (https://github.com/xwiki/xwiki-platform/security/advisories/GHSA-p9mj-v5mf-m82x). The patch addresses the improper escaping in notification preference macros. Detailed patch instructions and commit references are available in the vendor advisory and associated GitHub commit cebf9167e4fd64a8777781fc56461e9abbe0b32a.

Full Analysis
The vulnerability in the XWiki Commons libraries arises from improper input handling within the notification preferences macros, which are integral components of user profiles in XWiki installations. Specifically, the flaw allows an attacker with view rights on accessible documents to execute arbitrary code written in Groovy, Python, or Velocity. This occurs due to a failure to properly escape user-supplied parameters, enabling malicious actors to manipulate the execution context of the macros. The implications of this vulnerability are particularly severe, as it grants full access to the underlying XWiki installation, potentially compromising sensitive data and administrative controls.
Exploitation of this vulnerability can occur through various attack vectors. An attacker could craft a malicious document containing the vulnerable macro and share it with users who have view permissions. Once a user interacts with the document, the attacker’s code could be executed in the context of the XWiki server, leading to unauthorized access to the entire application. Furthermore, since the affected macros are installed by default, the likelihood of encountering this vulnerability in a typical deployment is high, increasing the risk of exploitation across numerous installations.
The real-world impact of this vulnerability is significant, particularly for organizations relying on XWiki for collaborative documentation and project management. Successful exploitation could lead to data breaches, unauthorized modifications to documents, and even the complete takeover of the XWiki instance. This not only poses a direct threat to the confidentiality and integrity of organizational data but also exposes businesses to regulatory penalties, reputational damage, and loss of customer trust. The potential for widespread exploitation amplifies the business risk, especially for organizations that handle sensitive information or operate in regulated industries.
To detect and mitigate this vulnerability, organizations should prioritize updating their XWiki installations to the patched versions, specifically 13.10.11, 14.4.7, and 14.10. Regularly applying security updates is crucial in maintaining a secure environment. Additionally, implementing strict access controls can help limit the exposure of vulnerable macros. Organizations should also conduct thorough security assessments and code reviews to identify and remediate similar vulnerabilities in their applications. Employing web application firewalls (WAFs) and intrusion detection systems (IDS) can provide an additional layer of defense by monitoring for unusual activity that may indicate exploitation attempts.
In conclusion, the vulnerability within the XWiki Commons libraries highlights the critical importance of proper input validation and escaping in web applications. The potential for arbitrary code execution poses a serious threat to the security of XWiki installations, making it imperative for organizations to adopt robust security practices. By staying informed about vulnerabilities, applying timely patches, and implementing comprehensive security measures, organizations can significantly reduce their risk exposure and protect their digital assets.
