CVE-2023-29017
Overview
This vulnerability is a sandbox escape due to improper handling of host objects passed to the Error.prepareStackTrace function within the vm2 sandbox environment. The root cause lies in vm2's failure to correctly validate or sanitize host objects during asynchronous error stack trace preparation. The affected component is the vm2 sandbox module, specifically versions prior to 3.9.15, which processes untrusted code with Node.js built-in modules whitelisted.
Vulnerability Description
vm2 is a sandbox that can run untrusted code with whitelisted Node's built-in modules. Prior to version 3.9.15, vm2 was not properly handling host objects passed to `Error.prepareStackTrace` in case of unhandled async errors. A threat actor could bypass the sandbox protections to gain remote code execution rights on the host running the sandbox. This vulnerability was patched in the release of version 3.9.15 of vm2. There are no known workarounds.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can execute arbitrary code on the host system running the vulnerable vm2 sandbox by exploiting the error stack trace handling flaw. This requires only the ability to run untrusted code within the sandbox environment, which is typically exposed in scenarios where vm2 executes third-party or user-supplied scripts. The attacker gains full control over the host process, leading to potential data compromise, service disruption, or further lateral movement. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N) confirms remote, no authentication exploitation with high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
Solution
Users of the patriksimek vm2 module must upgrade to version 3.9.15 or later, where the vulnerability in Error.prepareStackTrace handling is fixed. The official GitHub security advisory GHSA-7jxr-cg7f-gpgv provides detailed patch information and commit references. No workarounds exist, so applying the update is the only recommended remediation to address this critical security issue.
