CVE-2023-26493
Overview
This vulnerability is a command injection flaw rooted in improper handling of user-controlled input within a GitHub Actions workflow file. Specifically, the 'web-interface-check.yml' workflow processes the 'github.head_ref' variable, which represents the branch name from a forked repository, without sanitization. This unsanitized input is executed in the GitHub Runner environment, affecting the CI/CD pipeline component of the cocos-engine repository.
Vulnerability Description
Cocos Engine is an open-source framework for building 2D & 3D real-time rendering and interactive content. In the github repo for Cocos Engine the `web-interface-check.yml` was subject to command injection. The `web-interface-check.yml` was triggered when a pull request was opened or updated and contained the user controllable field `(${{ github.head_ref }} – the name of the fork’s branch)`. This would allow an attacker to take over the GitHub Runner and run custom commands (potentially stealing secrets such as GITHUB_TOKEN) and altering the repository. The workflow has since been removed for the repository. There are no actions required of users.
Impact
An attacker with the ability to open or update pull requests on the cocos-engine GitHub repository can execute arbitrary commands on the GitHub Runner environment. This requires no prior authentication beyond the ability to submit pull requests. Exploitation can lead to repository compromise, including unauthorized code execution, secret exfiltration such as GITHUB_TOKEN, and potential alteration of repository contents. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N) indicates network attack with low complexity and limited privileges (pull request contributor).
Solution
The remediation involved removal of the vulnerable 'web-interface-check.yml' workflow from the cocos-engine repository, as documented in the commit 6d06aefa2684e20da79e7ceaf41f728c1a8d7a41. Users should ensure no similar workflows process untrusted input without validation. Detailed patch information and advisory are available at the GitHub Security Lab advisory GHSL-2023-027 (https://securitylab.github.com/advisories/GHSL-2023-027_Engine_for_Cocos_Creator/). No further user action is required as the repository maintainers have addressed the issue.
