CVE-2023-21839
Overview
This vulnerability is an unauthorized access flaw rooted in improper access control within the Oracle WebLogic Server core component of Oracle Fusion Middleware. The issue arises from insecure handling of network protocols T3 and IIOP, which allow unauthenticated remote attackers to interact with internal services without validation. The affected component fails to enforce authentication or authorization checks on requests received via these protocols, enabling exploitation on specific supported versions.
Vulnerability Description
Vulnerability in the Oracle WebLogic Server product of Oracle Fusion Middleware (component: Core). Supported versions that are affected are 12.2.1.3.0, 12.2.1.4.0 and 14.1.1.0.0. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via T3, IIOP to compromise Oracle WebLogic Server. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized access to critical data or complete access to all Oracle WebLogic Server accessible data. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 7.5 (Confidentiality impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N).
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker with network access to the Oracle WebLogic Server via T3 or IIOP protocols can gain unauthorized access to critical or sensitive data stored or processed by the server. This access can expose confidential information or allow viewing of all data accessible through the WebLogic Server instance. No user credentials or prior authentication are required, enabling remote compromise that can lead to data breaches and loss of confidentiality within affected enterprise environments.
Solution
Oracle has issued security updates addressing this vulnerability in their January 2023 Critical Patch Update advisory, available at https://www.oracle.com/security-alerts/cpujan2023.html. Users of Oracle WebLogic Server versions 12.2.1.3.0, 12.2.1.4.0, and 14.1.1.0.0 should apply the relevant patches as detailed in this advisory. No specific workarounds are documented; therefore, timely application of the official patches is the recommended remediation step.
