CVE-2023-21716
Overview
This vulnerability is an integer overflow (CWE-190) in Microsoft Word, part of Microsoft Office LTSC for Mac 2021. The root cause lies in improper handling of numeric values during document parsing, leading to memory corruption. The flaw affects the Word document processing component responsible for parsing embedded data structures within files.
Vulnerability Description
Microsoft Word Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can execute arbitrary code remotely by convincing a user to open a malicious Word document, leveraging network delivery mechanisms. No user interaction beyond opening the document is required, and no privileges are needed prior to exploitation (CVSS vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N). Successful exploitation can lead to full compromise of the affected system, enabling data theft, persistence, or lateral movement within enterprise environments.
Solution
Microsoft has released security updates addressing this vulnerability in Microsoft Office LTSC for Mac 2021 and related products. Administrators should apply the patches detailed in the Microsoft Security Response Center advisory at https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2023-21716. The update replaces vulnerable parsing components and mitigates the integer overflow. No alternative mitigations or workarounds are specified in the advisory.
