CVE-2023-2136
Overview
This vulnerability is an integer overflow occurring within the Skia graphics library component used by Google Chrome. The root cause lies in improper handling of integer arithmetic operations that allow values to wrap around, leading to memory corruption. The flaw specifically affects the rendering process where crafted HTML content triggers the overflow during image or graphic processing.
Vulnerability Description
Integer overflow in Skia in Google Chrome prior to 112.0.5615.137 allowed a remote attacker who had compromised the renderer process to potentially perform a sandbox escape via a crafted HTML page. (Chromium security severity: High)
Impact
An attacker who has compromised the renderer process can exploit this vulnerability to escape the sandbox environment, gaining elevated privileges beyond the browser’s restricted context. This enables execution of arbitrary code on the host system, potentially leading to full system compromise. Exploitation requires the victim to load a crafted web page, but no prior authentication or additional user permissions are necessary. The consequence is a breach of the browser’s security boundary, undermining system integrity and confidentiality.
Solution
Google Chrome users should upgrade to version 112.0.5615.137 or later as detailed in the official Chrome stable channel update announcement (https://chromereleases.googleblog.com/2023/04/stable-channel-update-for-desktop_18.html). Fedora distributions have issued package updates announced via their mailing list (FEJZMAUB4XP44HSHEBDWEKFGA7DUHY42), and Debian users should apply corresponding security updates for Debian Linux 11.0. Refer to these vendor advisories for precise patching instructions and version details.
