CVE-2023-20036
Overview
This vulnerability is a command injection flaw rooted in improper input validation within the Device Pack upload functionality of Cisco Industrial Network Director's web UI. The affected component fails to sanitize or validate user-supplied data when processing Device Pack uploads, enabling injection of arbitrary system commands. The flaw resides specifically in the web interface's handling of upload requests, allowing crafted input to be executed on the underlying operating system with elevated privileges.
Vulnerability Description
A vulnerability in the web UI of Cisco IND could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary commands with administrative privileges on the underlying operating system of an affected device. This vulnerability is due to improper input validation when uploading a Device Pack. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by altering the request that is sent when uploading a Device Pack. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary commands as NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM on the underlying operating system of an affected device. Cisco has released software updates that address this vulnerability. There are no workarounds that address this vulnerability.
Impact
An attacker with valid credentials can execute arbitrary commands with NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM privileges on the device hosting Cisco Industrial Network Director. This enables full control over the underlying operating system, potentially leading to data compromise, service disruption, or lateral movement within the network. The attack requires network access to the web UI and authenticated user privileges, as indicated by CVSS vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H. The elevated privileges and network accessibility make this a critical threat to affected environments.
Solution
Cisco has released software updates addressing this vulnerability as detailed in their security advisory at https://sec.cloudapps.cisco.com/security/center/content/CiscoSecurityAdvisory/cisco-sa-ind-CAeLFk6V. Administrators should apply the latest patches for Cisco Industrial Network Director immediately. No workarounds exist; therefore, upgrading to the fixed software version is the only effective remediation step documented by Cisco.
