CVE-2023-0755
Overview
This vulnerability is an improper validation of array index within the PTC ThingWorx Edge C-SDK component. The root cause lies in insufficient boundary checks on array indices used in internal data structures or API parameters, allowing out-of-bounds access. The affected component fails to validate input values before using them as array indices, leading to memory corruption in the ThingWorx Edge C-SDK environment.
Vulnerability Description
The affected products are vulnerable to an improper validation of array index, which could allow an attacker to crash the server and remotely execute arbitrary code.
Impact
An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability over the network without user interaction, as indicated by CVSS vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N. Successful exploitation enables arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the ThingWorx Edge C-SDK process, allowing full compromise of the affected server. This can lead to service disruption, unauthorized control over industrial gateway operations, and potential lateral movement within the network.
Solution
PTC has released patches addressing this vulnerability in the ThingWorx Edge C-SDK as detailed in the CISA ICS advisory ICSA-23-054-01 (https://www.cisa.gov/uscert/ics/advisories/icsa-23-054-01). Users should apply the latest updates provided by PTC for the ThingWorx Edge C-SDK and related products such as Kepware Server and Kepware ServerEX. Refer to the vendor's official security bulletin for exact version numbers and patch instructions to mitigate this issue.
