CVE-2022-45808
Overview
This vulnerability is a SQL Injection flaw rooted in improper sanitization of user-supplied input within the LearnPress WordPress LMS Plugin. Specifically, the injection occurs in the 'order_by' parameter of the courses archive API endpoint, allowing unfiltered input to be embedded directly into SQL queries. The affected component is the REST API endpoint handling course archive requests in versions up to 4.1.7.3.2.
Vulnerability Description
SQL Injection vulnerability in LearnPress – WordPress LMS Plugin <= 4.1.7.3.2 versions.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability to execute blind SQL injection attacks, enabling extraction of sensitive data including user credentials, course content, and student information from the backend database. No user interaction or authentication is required, facilitating remote data exfiltration. This can lead to data breaches compromising user privacy and intellectual property stored within the LMS environment, potentially disrupting educational operations and damaging organizational reputation.
Solution
To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade LearnPress WordPress LMS Plugin to version 4.2.0 or later, where the issue has been addressed. Detailed patch instructions and version release notes are available at Patchstack advisories: https://patchstack.com/database/vulnerability/learnpress/wordpress-learnpress-wordpress-lms-plugin-plugin-4-1-7-3-2-sql-injection?_s_id=cve and https://patchstack.com/articles/multiple-critical-vulnerabilities-fixed-in-learnpress-plugin-version/. No alternative workarounds are documented; immediate update is recommended.
