CVE-2022-43939
Overview
This vulnerability is an authentication bypass caused by improper handling of non-canonical URL paths in the Hitachi Vantara Pentaho Business Analytics Server. The root cause lies in the server's authorization mechanism, which fails to normalize URL inputs before enforcing access controls. This flaw affects the server's administrative endpoint authorization logic, allowing unauthorized access through crafted URL requests.
Vulnerability Description
Hitachi Vantara Pentaho Business Analytics Server versions before 9.4.0.1 and 9.3.0.2, including 8.3.x contain security restrictions using non-canonical URLs which can be circumvented.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can bypass authorization controls to access protected administrative endpoints within the Pentaho Business Analytics Server. This unauthorized access allows viewing and potentially modifying sensitive analytics data and server configurations. No user interaction or valid credentials are required, increasing the risk of data exposure and unauthorized administrative actions that could compromise business intelligence operations.
Solution
Apply the vendor-released patches by upgrading Hitachi Vantara Pentaho Business Analytics Server to version 9.4.0.1 or 9.3.0.2 or later as detailed in the official advisory at https://support.pentaho.com/hc/en-us/articles/14455394120333. Follow the vendor's patch installation instructions closely to ensure all affected components are updated. No alternative workarounds are documented in the advisory.
