CVE-2022-42971
Overview
This vulnerability is an unrestricted file upload flaw (CWE-434) in Schneider Electric APC Easy UPS Online Monitoring Software. The root cause is the software's failure to properly validate and restrict file types during upload, allowing malicious files to be accepted. The affected component is the file upload functionality within the monitoring software on various Windows operating systems prior to specific version releases.
Vulnerability Description
A CWE-434: Unrestricted Upload of File with Dangerous Type vulnerability exists that could cause remote code execution when the attacker uploads a malicious JSP file. Affected Products: APC Easy UPS Online Monitoring Software (Windows 7, 10, 11 & Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022 - Versions prior to V2.5-GA), APC Easy UPS Online Monitoring Software (Windows 11, Windows Server 2019, 2022 - Versions prior to V2.5-GA-01-22261), Schneider Electric Easy UPS Online Monitoring Software (Windows 7, 10, 11 & Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022 - Versions prior to V2.5-GS), Schneider Electric Easy UPS Online Monitoring Software (Windows 11, Windows Server 2019, 2022 - Versions prior to V2.5-GS-01-22261)
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker with network access can upload and execute malicious JSP files remotely, resulting in full system compromise including confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts. This enables remote code execution without user interaction or privileges, facilitating unauthorized control over the affected system. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N) confirms that no authentication or user interaction is required, amplifying the severity and potential for exploitation in operational environments.
Solution
Schneider Electric recommends upgrading APC Easy UPS Online Monitoring Software to versions V2.5-GA or later, including V2.5-GA-01-22261, V2.5-GS, and V2.5-GS-01-22261, as detailed in their Security Notification SEVD-2022-347-01. The advisory provides specific patch files and installation instructions to remediate the unrestricted file upload vulnerability. Users should apply these updates promptly to eliminate the risk associated with malicious file uploads.
