CVE-2022-38008
Overview
This vulnerability is a remote code execution flaw caused by improper validation of user-supplied input within Microsoft SharePoint Enterprise Server 2016 components. The root cause lies in insufficient access control and input sanitization in certain SharePoint server functionalities, allowing an authenticated user with limited privileges to execute arbitrary code. The affected components include SharePoint Server 2016 and certain SharePoint Foundation and Enterprise Server 2013 versions with specific service packs.
Vulnerability Description
Microsoft SharePoint Server Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
Impact
An attacker with valid credentials can execute arbitrary code remotely on affected SharePoint servers, potentially leading to full system compromise. The prerequisite is authenticated access with limited privileges, with no user interaction required. This can result in unauthorized data access, service disruption, or lateral movement within the network. The CVSS vector indicates network attack vector (AV:N), low attack complexity (AC:L), and high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability (C:H/I:H/A:H).
Solution
Microsoft has released security updates addressing this vulnerability for SharePoint Enterprise Server 2016 and SharePoint Server/Foundation 2013 SP1 as detailed in the vendor advisory at https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2022-38008. Administrators should apply the latest cumulative security updates provided by Microsoft for the affected products. No specific workarounds are noted; patching is the recommended remediation step.
