CVE-2022-30284
Overview
The vulnerability is a command injection (CWE-88) caused by improper validation of arguments passed to the NmapProcess component within the python-libnmap package. Specifically, the affected feature allows execution of system commands constructed from user-supplied input without adequate sanitization or validation, enabling injection of arbitrary commands. This flaw resides in the handling of arguments used to invoke the underlying Nmap process within the library.
Vulnerability Description
In the python-libnmap package through 0.7.2 for Python, remote command execution can occur (if used in a client application that does not validate arguments). NOTE: the vendor believes it would be unrealistic for an application to call NmapProcess with arguments taken from input data that arrived over an untrusted network, and thus the CVSS score corresponds to an unrealistic use case. None of the NmapProcess documentation implies that this is an expected use case
Impact
An attacker with the ability to supply input to an application using python-libnmap can execute arbitrary commands on the host system without authentication (CVSS vector AV:N/PR:N/UI:N). This can lead to full system compromise, data exfiltration, or lateral movement within a network. The prerequisite is that the vulnerable application passes untrusted input directly to NmapProcess arguments, which is considered an unrealistic use case by the vendor. However, if present, this flaw allows remote code execution with high privileges and no user interaction.
Solution
Users should upgrade python-libnmap to a version later than 0.7.2 where this issue is addressed. The vendor’s advisory available at https://github.com/savon-noir/python-libnmap/releases provides patched releases and detailed instructions. No specific workaround is documented, so upgrading the library and ensuring client applications do not pass untrusted input to NmapProcess is essential.
