CVE-2022-29184
Overview
This vulnerability is a command injection flaw rooted in improper handling of Mercurial (hg) branch names within GoCD's pipeline material and configuration repository processing. The affected component is the Mercurial-based pipeline materials and configuration repositories feature, where malicious branch names exploit Mercurial hooks and aliases to execute arbitrary commands on the GoCD server. The flaw arises from insufficient sanitization of user-controlled inputs in pipeline or repository configurations prior to command execution.
Vulnerability Description
GoCD is a continuous delivery server. In GoCD versions prior to 22.1.0, it is possible for existing authenticated users who have permissions to edit or create pipeline materials or pipeline configuration repositories to get remote code execution capability on the GoCD server via configuring a malicious branch name which abuses Mercurial hooks/aliases to exploit a command injection weakness. An attacker would require access to an account with existing GoCD administration permissions to either create/edit (`hg`-based) configuration repositories; create/edit pipelines and their (`hg`-based) materials; or, where "pipelines-as-code" configuration repositories are used, to commit malicious configuration to such an external repository which will be automatically parsed into a pipeline configuration and (`hg`) material definition by the GoCD server. This issue is fixed in GoCD 22.1.0. As a workaround, users who do not use/rely upon Mercurial materials can uninstall/remove the `hg`/Mercurial binary from the underlying GoCD Server operating system or Docker image.
Impact
An attacker with existing GoCD administration permissions can leverage this vulnerability to execute arbitrary commands on the GoCD server remotely, potentially compromising the server environment. Exploitation requires authenticated access with pipeline or configuration repository editing rights and network access to the GoCD server. Successful exploitation can lead to full system compromise, affecting confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the continuous delivery infrastructure. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N) indicates network attack with low complexity and required privileges but no user interaction.
Solution
Upgrade GoCD to version 22.1.0 or later, where this command injection vulnerability has been addressed as documented in the official GoCD security advisory GHSA-vf5r-r7j2-cf2h and release notes at https://github.com/gocd/gocd/releases/tag/22.1.0 and https://www.gocd.org/releases/#22-1-0. As a workaround, if Mercurial materials are not used, remove the hg/Mercurial binary from the GoCD server operating system or Docker image to prevent exploitation.

Full Analysis
The vulnerability in the GoCD continuous delivery server arises from a command injection flaw that can be exploited through the configuration of malicious branch names in Mercurial repositories. Specifically, this weakness allows authenticated users with sufficient permissions to edit or create pipeline materials to execute arbitrary commands on the GoCD server. The exploitation hinges on the use of Mercurial hooks or aliases, which can be manipulated to inject malicious commands. This flaw is particularly concerning because it does not require the attacker to have administrative access to the server; rather, it suffices to have an account with permissions to modify pipeline configurations, making it accessible to a broader range of users within an organization.
Attack vectors for this vulnerability are varied and can be executed in multiple scenarios. An attacker could create or edit a pipeline that references a malicious branch name, which, when processed by the GoCD server, triggers the execution of the injected commands. Furthermore, in environments utilizing "pipelines-as-code," an attacker could commit malicious configurations to an external repository, which would then be automatically parsed and executed by the GoCD server. This method of exploitation emphasizes the importance of access control and the potential risks associated with overly permissive user roles within the continuous delivery pipeline.
The real-world impact of this vulnerability is significant, particularly for organizations that rely on GoCD for their software delivery processes. Successful exploitation could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, disruption of services, or even complete takeover of the server. The business risks are compounded by the potential for data breaches, loss of customer trust, and regulatory repercussions, especially in industries that are subject to strict compliance requirements. The high CVSS score of 8.8 indicates the severity of this vulnerability, underscoring the need for immediate attention from organizations using affected versions of GoCD.
To detect and mitigate this vulnerability, organizations should first ensure they are running the latest version of GoCD, as the issue is resolved in version 22.1.0. For those unable to upgrade immediately, a temporary workaround involves removing the Mercurial binary from the server or Docker image, effectively disabling the vulnerable functionality. Additionally, implementing strict access controls and regularly auditing user permissions can help minimize the risk of exploitation. Monitoring logs for unusual activity related to pipeline modifications can also aid in early detection of potential attacks. Organizations should consider adopting a defense-in-depth strategy, incorporating both technical controls and user training to enhance their overall security posture against such vulnerabilities.
In conclusion, the command injection vulnerability in GoCD presents a serious risk to organizations utilizing this continuous delivery server. The potential for exploitation by authenticated users with elevated permissions necessitates immediate action to mitigate risks. By prioritizing upgrades, enforcing strict access controls, and maintaining vigilant monitoring practices, organizations can significantly reduce their exposure to this and similar vulnerabilities in the future.
