CVE-2022-26871
Overview
This vulnerability is an arbitrary file upload flaw in Trend Micro Apex Central's web interface. The root cause lies in insufficient validation of uploaded files within the file upload component, allowing unauthenticated remote users to bypass restrictions. The affected feature improperly processes file input parameters, enabling attackers to submit files without authentication or integrity checks.
Vulnerability Description
An arbitrary file upload vulnerability in Trend Micro Apex Central could allow an unauthenticated remote attacker to upload an arbitrary file which could lead to remote code execution.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can upload and execute arbitrary code on the affected Trend Micro Apex Central server, resulting in full system compromise. This enables control over the underlying host, potential data exfiltration, lateral movement within the network, and disruption of security monitoring services. No user interaction or credentials are necessary, increasing the attack surface significantly. Exploitation can lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data and undermine the security posture of the entire environment.
Solution
Trend Micro has released security advisories accessible at https://success.trendmicro.com/solution/000290678 and https://success.trendmicro.com/jp/solution/000290660 detailing patches and mitigations. Users of Apex Central 2019 and Apex One SaaS should apply the vendor-provided updates immediately as per advisory instructions. The advisories include version-specific patches and recommend disabling vulnerable upload functionalities until updates are applied. Refer to these official advisories for precise patch versions and deployment guidance.
