CVE-2022-24439
Overview
This vulnerability is a command injection flaw caused by improper sanitization of user-supplied input within the GitPython library. Specifically, the library's clone command accepts a remote URL parameter that is not adequately validated, allowing injection of malicious shell commands. The affected component is the GitPython repository management interface that invokes external Git commands without sufficient input validation.
Vulnerability Description
All versions of package gitpython are vulnerable to Remote Code Execution (RCE) due to improper user input validation, which makes it possible to inject a maliciously crafted remote URL into the clone command. Exploiting this vulnerability is possible because the library makes external calls to git without sufficient sanitization of input arguments.
Impact
An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code on the host system by supplying a maliciously crafted remote URL to the GitPython clone function. This can result in full system compromise, data exfiltration, or disruption of services. The attack requires network access but no user interaction or privileges, consistent with the CVSS vector indicating network attack complexity with no privileges or user interaction required (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N).
Solution
Users should upgrade GitPython to a patched version as recommended in Fedora package announcements (e.g., Fedora 36, 37, 38 advisories) and Debian LTS announcements. Gentoo GLSA-202311-01 also provides updated package versions addressing this issue. Detailed patch instructions and version updates are available from the Fedora package-announce mailing list archives and Debian LTS security announcements. Refer to https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/[email protected]/message/IKMVYKLWX62UEYKAN64RUZMOIAMZM5JN/ for Fedora advisories and https://lists.debian.org/debian-lts-announce/2023/07/msg00024.html for Debian guidance.
