CVE-2022-24112
Overview
This vulnerability is an authentication bypass combined with a logic flaw in the batch-requests plugin of Apache APISIX. The root cause is a bypass of the client IP verification check within the batch-requests plugin, which fails to correctly enforce IP restrictions on the Admin API. The affected component is the batch-requests plugin handling Admin API requests, specifically in the IP restriction enforcement mechanism.
Vulnerability Description
An attacker can abuse the batch-requests plugin to send requests to bypass the IP restriction of Admin API. A default configuration of Apache APISIX (with default API key) is vulnerable to remote code execution. When the admin key was changed or the port of Admin API was changed to a port different from the data panel, the impact is lower. But there is still a risk to bypass the IP restriction of Apache APISIX's data panel. There is a check in the batch-requests plugin which overrides the client IP with its real remote IP. But due to a bug in the code, this check can be bypassed.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can bypass IP restrictions on the Admin API and execute arbitrary system commands remotely. This allows full remote code execution on the affected Apache APISIX server, potentially leading to complete system compromise. No user interaction or valid credentials are required, enabling attackers to control backend services, exfiltrate data, or disrupt operations.
Solution
Apply the patch released by Apache Software Foundation as detailed in their security advisory linked at https://lists.apache.org/thread/lcdqywz8zy94mdysk7p3gfdgn51jmt94. Upgrade Apache APISIX to the fixed version that corrects the batch-requests plugin IP check logic. Follow the vendor's official documentation for patch installation and verify that the Admin API is configured with non-default API keys and ports as additional mitigation steps.
