CVE-2022-23616
Overview
This vulnerability is a code injection flaw rooted in improper handling of user-supplied Groovy scripts within user profiles. Specifically, the XWiki Platform's Reset Password feature executes a save operation on the user profile with elevated programming rights, enabling injection of malicious Groovy code. The affected component is the Reset Password functionality in XWiki versions prior to 13.1RC1, where insufficient validation permits execution of injected scripts under privileged context.
Vulnerability Description
XWiki Platform is a generic wiki platform offering runtime services for applications built on top of it. In affected versions it's possible for an unprivileged user to perform a remote code execution by injecting a groovy script in her own profile and by calling the Reset password feature since the feature is performing a save of the user profile with programming rights in the impacted versions of XWiki. The issue has been patched in XWiki 13.1RC1. There are two different possible workarounds, each consisting of modifying the XWiki/ResetPassword page. 1. The Reset password feature can be entirely disabled by deleting the XWiki/ResetPassword page. 2. The script in XWiki/ResetPassword can also be modified or removed: an administrator can replace it with a simple email contact to ask an administrator to reset the password.
Impact
An attacker with a valid user account can execute arbitrary code remotely on the server by injecting Groovy scripts into their profile and triggering the Reset Password feature. This requires authenticated access (PR:L) but no user interaction beyond invoking the reset. The attacker gains full control over the application context, potentially leading to data compromise, service disruption, or lateral movement within the environment. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) confirms network exploitability with low complexity and no user interaction.
Solution
Upgrade the XWiki Platform to version 13.1RC1 or later as detailed in the official advisory (GHSA-mgjw-2wrp-r535). As interim mitigations, administrators can disable the Reset Password feature by deleting the XWiki/ResetPassword page or modify its script to remove execution capabilities, for example by replacing it with a simple email contact form. Detailed patch and workaround instructions are available at the XWiki security advisory and Jira ticket linked in the references.

Full Analysis
The vulnerability in the XWiki Platform arises from improper handling of user profiles, specifically in the context of the Reset Password feature. An unprivileged user can exploit this flaw by injecting a malicious Groovy script into their profile. When the Reset Password functionality is invoked, the system inadvertently saves the user profile with elevated programming rights, allowing the execution of the injected script. This oversight in the design of the application exposes the platform to remote code execution, which can have severe implications for the integrity and confidentiality of the system.
Exploitation of this vulnerability can occur through various attack vectors. An attacker with minimal privileges can leverage the Reset Password feature to execute arbitrary code on the server. For instance, by crafting a malicious script that, when executed, could manipulate server-side processes, access sensitive data, or even pivot to other parts of the network. The simplicity of the attack, requiring only a user account and the ability to modify the profile, makes it particularly dangerous. Furthermore, the potential for automated exploitation through scripts or bots increases the risk, as attackers could target multiple accounts in a short timeframe.
The real-world impact of this vulnerability is significant, particularly for organizations relying on the XWiki Platform for collaboration and information sharing. Successful exploitation could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, disruption of services, and potential data breaches. The business risks associated with such an incident include financial losses, reputational damage, and legal ramifications stemming from non-compliance with data protection regulations. Organizations may face a loss of trust from users and stakeholders, which can have long-lasting effects on their operations and market position.
To detect and mitigate this vulnerability, organizations should prioritize updating to the patched version of the XWiki Platform. Regularly applying security updates is crucial in maintaining a secure environment. Additionally, administrators can implement workarounds by either disabling the Reset Password feature entirely or modifying the functionality to redirect users to contact an administrator for password resets. This proactive approach minimizes the risk of exploitation while maintaining user access control. Continuous monitoring for unusual activities, such as unexpected profile changes or unauthorized access attempts, can also serve as an effective detection strategy.
In conclusion, the vulnerability within the XWiki Platform highlights the critical importance of secure coding practices and thorough testing of user input handling. Organizations must remain vigilant in their cybersecurity posture, ensuring that all components of their systems are regularly assessed for vulnerabilities. By adopting a comprehensive security strategy that includes timely updates, effective user management, and proactive monitoring, businesses can significantly reduce their exposure to such threats and safeguard their digital assets.
