CVE-2022-20695
Overview
This vulnerability is an authentication bypass in Cisco Wireless LAN Controller (WLC) software caused by improper implementation of the password validation algorithm. The flaw resides in the authentication functionality of the management interface, allowing crafted credentials to circumvent normal authentication checks. The affected component is the management interface authentication mechanism in specific WLC software versions.
Vulnerability Description
A vulnerability in the authentication functionality of Cisco Wireless LAN Controller (WLC) Software could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to bypass authentication controls and log in to the device through the management interface This vulnerability is due to the improper implementation of the password validation algorithm. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by logging in to an affected device with crafted credentials. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to bypass authentication and log in to the device as an administrator. The attacker could obtain privileges that are the same level as an administrative user but it depends on the crafted credentials. Note: This vulnerability exists because of a non-default device configuration that must be present for it to be exploitable. For details about the vulnerable configuration, see the Vulnerable Products section of this advisory.
Impact
An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability to bypass authentication controls and gain administrative access to the Cisco WLC device through its management interface. This access allows the attacker to perform any administrative actions with privileges equivalent to an administrator. Exploitation requires network access to the management interface and the presence of a specific non-default configuration. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N) indicates no privileges or user interaction are required, amplifying the severity of unauthorized device control.
Solution
Cisco has released patches addressing this authentication bypass in WLC software versions 8.10.151.0 and 8.10.162.0, as detailed in their security advisory (https://tools.cisco.com/security/center/content/CiscoSecurityAdvisory/cisco-sa-wlc-auth-bypass-JRNhV4fF). Administrators should upgrade affected devices to the fixed versions provided by Cisco. The advisory also outlines configuration checks to identify vulnerable setups and recommends applying the vendor-supplied updates promptly to mitigate exploitation risk.
