CVE-2022-0651

HIGH Pub 24/02 Upd 31/01

Overview

This vulnerability is a SQL Injection in the WP Statistics WordPress plugin caused by improper sanitization and lack of parameterization of the current_page_type parameter. The flaw resides in the ~/includes/class-wp-statistics-hits.php file, where user-supplied input is directly incorporated into SQL queries without adequate escaping. This improper handling of input allows injection of arbitrary SQL commands within the plugin's database interaction component.

Vulnerability Description

The WP Statistics WordPress plugin is vulnerable to SQL Injection due to insufficient escaping and parameterization of the current_page_type parameter found in the ~/includes/class-wp-statistics-hits.php file which allows attackers without authentication to inject arbitrary SQL queries to obtain sensitive information, in versions up to and including 13.1.5.

Impact

An attacker without any authentication can exploit this SQL Injection to execute arbitrary SQL queries on the backend database, potentially extracting sensitive information such as user data or site configuration. The vulnerability requires only network access and no user interaction, as indicated by the CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N). Successful exploitation can lead to data breaches and compromise of the WordPress site's confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Solution

Users should upgrade WP Statistics to a version later than 13.1.5 where the vulnerability is patched. The Wordfence advisory and the WordPress plugin changelog provide detailed patch information and confirm the fix in subsequent releases. Administrators are advised to follow the vendor’s update instructions at https://www.wordfence.com/vulnerability-advisories/#CVE-2022-0651 to apply the security update promptly.
