CVE-2021-38000
Overview
This vulnerability is an open redirect caused by insufficient validation of untrusted input within the Intent handling mechanism of Google Chrome on Android. The root cause lies in improper sanitization of URL parameters passed to the Intent component, allowing crafted HTML pages to manipulate browser navigation. The affected component is the Intent processing logic in versions of Google Chrome prior to 95.0.4638.69 on Android platforms.
Vulnerability Description
Insufficient validation of untrusted input in Intents in Google Chrome on Android prior to 95.0.4638.69 allowed a remote attacker to arbitrarily browser to a malicious URL via a crafted HTML page.
Impact
An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to redirect users to malicious websites without their consent, potentially facilitating phishing attacks or drive-by downloads. Exploitation requires only that a user visits a crafted HTML page, with no authentication or elevated privileges needed. This can lead to compromise of user trust, exposure to malware, and unauthorized data collection through deceptive navigation.
Solution
Google Chrome users on Android should update to version 95.0.4638.69 or later as detailed in the official Chrome stable channel update announcement (https://chromereleases.googleblog.com/2021/10/stable-channel-update-for-desktop_28.html). Fedora and Debian have issued security advisories (Fedora package announce mailing list message ID 3W46HRT2UVHWSLZB6JZHQF6JNQWKV744 and Debian DSA-5046) containing patches and update instructions for their respective distributions. Users should apply these updates promptly to remediate the issue.
