CVE-2021-31196
Overview
This vulnerability is a remote code execution flaw caused by improper validation of input data within Microsoft Exchange Server's handling of certain client requests. The root cause lies in a flaw in the Exchange Server's backend processing component that fails to correctly sanitize or authenticate input parameters, allowing maliciously crafted requests to execute arbitrary code. Affected components include cumulative updates of Exchange Server 2013, 2016, and 2019 versions.
Vulnerability Description
Microsoft Exchange Server Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
Impact
An attacker with a valid elevated privilege account can exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code remotely on the Exchange Server, potentially gaining full control over the affected system. This enables unauthorized access to sensitive email data, modification or deletion of information, and lateral movement within the network. The vulnerability requires an attacker to have elevated privileges but does not require user interaction, increasing the risk of targeted attacks within compromised environments.
Solution
Microsoft has released security updates addressing this vulnerability in Exchange Server 2013 Cumulative Update 23, Exchange Server 2016 Cumulative Updates 20 and 21, and Exchange Server 2019 Cumulative Updates 9 and 10. Administrators should apply the latest cumulative updates for their respective Exchange Server versions as detailed in the Microsoft Security Guidance advisory at https://portal.msrc.microsoft.com/en-US/security-guidance/advisory/CVE-2021-31196. No specific workarounds are recommended beyond applying these official patches promptly.
