CVE-2021-31166
Overview
This vulnerability is a use-after-free condition within the HTTP Protocol Stack component of Microsoft Windows 10 Version 2004 and related server versions. The flaw arises from improper handling of HTTP requests in the HTTP.sys kernel driver, where memory is freed prematurely during request processing. This leads to a corruption state in the kernel memory management of the HTTP Protocol Stack, affecting the low-level HTTP server functionality of the operating system.
Vulnerability Description
HTTP Protocol Stack Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can remotely execute arbitrary code in kernel mode by sending malicious HTTP requests to the vulnerable HTTP.sys service. This enables full system compromise, including the ability to install programs, view or modify data, or create new accounts with full user rights. No user interaction or prior access is required, allowing exploitation over the network. The breach can lead to complete control over affected systems, facilitating data theft, service disruption, or lateral movement within enterprise environments.
Solution
Microsoft has released security updates addressing this vulnerability in the Microsoft Security Advisory linked at https://portal.msrc.microsoft.com/en-US/security-guidance/advisory/CVE-2021-31166. The patches apply to Microsoft Windows 10 Version 2004, 20H2, and corresponding Windows Server versions. Administrators should deploy the latest cumulative updates for these products as detailed in the advisory. No specific workarounds are recommended beyond applying the official updates.
