CVE-2021-28474
Overview
This vulnerability is a remote code execution flaw caused by improper handling of privileged operations within Microsoft SharePoint Server 2016 Enterprise. The root cause lies in insufficient validation of user privileges when processing specific server requests, allowing elevation of privileges through SharePoint's server-side components. The affected component is the SharePoint Server's enterprise features that manage user requests and command execution.
Vulnerability Description
Microsoft SharePoint Server Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
Impact
An attacker with authenticated access to the network can execute arbitrary code remotely on the affected SharePoint Server, potentially gaining full control over the server environment. This requires low privilege authentication but no user interaction, enabling lateral movement and full compromise of SharePoint data and services. The CVSS vector indicates network attack vector with low attack complexity and no user interaction, emphasizing the ease of exploitation once authentication is obtained. This can lead to data breaches, service disruption, and further infiltration within enterprise environments.
Solution
Microsoft has released security updates addressing this vulnerability in SharePoint Server 2016 Enterprise as detailed in their security advisory at https://portal.msrc.microsoft.com/en-US/security-guidance/advisory/CVE-2021-28474. Administrators should apply the latest cumulative updates for SharePoint Server 2016 and related versions immediately. No specific workarounds are recommended by Microsoft; patching is the primary remediation method to mitigate this vulnerability.
