CVE-2021-22175
Overview
This vulnerability is a server-side request forgery (SSRF) in GitLab's webhook handling mechanism. The root cause lies in insecure processing of webhook requests that allows crafted payloads to trigger internal network requests. The affected component is the GitLab API endpoint responsible for CI linting, specifically handling webhook content inclusion from external sources.
Vulnerability Description
When requests to the internal network for webhooks are enabled, a server-side request forgery vulnerability in GitLab affecting all versions starting from 10.5 was possible to exploit for an unauthenticated attacker even on a GitLab instance where registration is disabled
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability to perform arbitrary HTTP requests on the internal network accessible from the GitLab server. This can lead to unauthorized information disclosure of internal services or facilitate further internal network compromise. No user interaction or valid credentials are needed, enabling remote attackers to pivot into protected network segments, potentially exposing sensitive data or internal resources.
Solution
GitLab has addressed this issue in subsequent releases after version 10.5. Users should upgrade to the latest GitLab version as detailed in the official GitLab advisory (https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/issues/294178). The advisory provides patch instructions and recommended configurations to disable or restrict webhook requests to prevent SSRF exploitation. Refer to the GitLab security page for the most current remediation guidance.
