CVE-2020-9409
Overview
This vulnerability is an authentication bypass in the administrative UI component of TIBCO JasperReports Server and its variants. The root cause lies in improper access control validation, allowing unauthenticated remote requests to escalate privileges. The affected component fails to enforce authentication checks on critical administrative endpoints, enabling unauthorized permission acquisition.
Vulnerability Description
The administrative UI component of TIBCO Software Inc.'s TIBCO JasperReports Server, TIBCO JasperReports Server for AWS Marketplace, and TIBCO JasperReports Server for ActiveMatrix BPM contains a vulnerability that theoretically allows an unauthenticated attacker to obtain the permissions of a JasperReports Server "superuser" for the affected systems. The attacker can theoretically exploit the vulnerability consistently, remotely, and without authenticating. Affected releases are TIBCO Software Inc.'s TIBCO JasperReports Server: versions 7.1.1 and below, TIBCO JasperReports Server for AWS Marketplace: versions 7.1.1 and below, and TIBCO JasperReports Server for ActiveMatrix BPM: versions 7.1.1 and below.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can remotely gain superuser permissions on affected JasperReports Server installations, enabling full administrative control over the system. No authentication or user interaction is required (CVSS vector: AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N). This allows unauthorized data access, configuration changes, and potential disruption of reporting services, severely compromising confidentiality, integrity, and availability within enterprise environments.
Solution
Apply the security updates provided by TIBCO in their official advisories at http://www.tibco.com/services/support/advisories, which address this authentication bypass in JasperReports Server versions above 7.1.1. Additionally, Oracle's October 2020 Critical Patch Update (https://www.oracle.com/security-alerts/cpuoct2020.html) includes relevant fixes for related components. Organizations should upgrade to patched versions as specified by the vendors and follow their detailed patching instructions to remediate the vulnerability.
