CVE-2020-8468
Overview
This vulnerability is a content validation escape flaw affecting agent client components in Trend Micro Apex One (2019), OfficeScan XG, and Worry-Free Business Security (WFBS) versions 9.0, 9.5, and 10.0. The root cause lies in insufficient validation of content inputs within the agent software, allowing manipulation of internal client components. The affected components are the agent clients responsible for processing and validating content updates or commands.
Vulnerability Description
Trend Micro Apex One (2019), OfficeScan XG and Worry-Free Business Security (9.0, 9.5, 10.0) agents are affected by a content validation escape vulnerability which could allow an attacker to manipulate certain agent client components. An attempted attack requires user authentication.
Impact
An attacker with authenticated access can leverage this vulnerability to manipulate agent client components, potentially leading to unauthorized modification of agent behavior or execution of malicious instructions within the agent context. This could result in compromise of endpoint security controls, unauthorized data access, or disruption of security services. The prerequisite is possession of valid user credentials to the affected agent interface, limiting exploitation to users with some level of system access. Business impact includes potential lateral movement, data integrity compromise, and weakening of endpoint defense mechanisms.
Solution
Trend Micro has released security advisories addressing this issue, detailed at https://success.trendmicro.com/solution/000245571 and https://success.trendmicro.com/solution/000245572. Users of Apex One (2019), OfficeScan XG, and WFBS (9.0 SP3, 9.5) are advised to apply the provided patches or updates as specified in these advisories. The vendor does not list alternative mitigations; therefore, applying the official patches is the recommended remediation step.
