CVE-2020-8349
Overview
The vulnerability is an unauthenticated remote code execution flaw resulting from improper input validation within the optional REST API management interface of Lenovo Cloud Networking Operating System (CNOS). Specifically, the REST API component fails to enforce authentication and authorization controls when enabled, allowing execution of arbitrary code through crafted requests. This flaw affects the REST API management interface module when it is activated and attached to a Virtual Routing and Forwarding (VRF) instance with permissive access control lists (ACLs).
Vulnerability Description
An internal security review has identified an unauthenticated remote code execution vulnerability in Cloud Networking Operating System (CNOS)’ optional REST API management interface. This interface is disabled by default and not vulnerable unless enabled. When enabled, it is only vulnerable where attached to a VRF and as allowed by defined ACLs. Lenovo strongly recommends upgrading to a non-vulnerable CNOS release. Where not possible, Lenovo recommends disabling the REST API management interface or restricting access to the management VRF and further limiting access to authorized management stations via ACL.
Impact
An attacker with network access to the enabled REST API management interface can execute arbitrary code on the affected CNOS device without authentication, as indicated by CVSS vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N. This allows full compromise of the device, potentially leading to unauthorized control over network infrastructure, data exfiltration, or disruption of services. The vulnerability requires the REST API interface to be enabled and accessible within a management VRF with permissive ACLs, limiting exposure to specific network configurations.
Solution
Lenovo recommends upgrading to a CNOS release that includes the fix detailed in advisory LEN-44423 available at https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/product_security/LEN-44423. Where upgrading is not immediately possible, Lenovo advises disabling the optional REST API management interface or restricting its access by limiting the management VRF attachment and applying strict ACLs to allow only authorized management stations. Refer to the Lenovo advisory for detailed patch and configuration instructions.

Full Analysis
The vulnerability in the Cloud Networking Operating System (CNOS) pertains to an unauthenticated remote code execution flaw within its optional REST API management interface. This interface, which is disabled by default, presents a significant risk when enabled, particularly when it is configured to operate within a Virtual Routing and Forwarding (VRF) context. The vulnerability arises from improper access controls, allowing an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the system without authentication. The implications of this flaw are severe, as it can lead to complete system compromise, data exfiltration, and disruption of network services.
Attack vectors for this vulnerability primarily involve exploiting the REST API management interface when it is enabled and improperly secured. An attacker could leverage this flaw by sending specially crafted requests to the API, which would be processed by the underlying system. If the API is attached to a VRF and the Access Control Lists (ACLs) are not adequately defined, the attacker could gain unauthorized access to sensitive network resources. Scenarios could include an external attacker targeting a misconfigured network device or an internal threat actor exploiting the vulnerability to escalate privileges and gain control over critical infrastructure components.
The real-world impact of this vulnerability can be profound, particularly for organizations relying on CNOS for their cloud networking needs. A successful exploitation could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, manipulation of network configurations, and potential service outages. The business risks associated with such an incident include financial losses, reputational damage, and regulatory penalties, especially if sensitive customer data is compromised. Organizations may also face increased operational costs related to incident response and recovery efforts, as well as potential legal ramifications stemming from data breaches.
To detect and mitigate this vulnerability, organizations should first conduct a thorough assessment of their CNOS deployments to identify whether the REST API management interface is enabled. If it is in use, immediate steps should be taken to restrict access through robust ACL configurations, ensuring that only authorized management stations can interact with the API. Furthermore, organizations are strongly advised to upgrade to a non-vulnerable release of CNOS as a long-term solution. In scenarios where upgrading is not feasible, disabling the REST API management interface entirely is a prudent measure to eliminate the risk of exploitation.
In conclusion, the unauthenticated remote code execution vulnerability in the Cloud Networking Operating System's REST API management interface poses a significant threat to network security. Organizations must prioritize the assessment and remediation of this vulnerability to safeguard their infrastructure against potential attacks. By implementing stringent access controls, conducting regular security reviews, and maintaining up-to-date software, businesses can mitigate the risks associated with this and similar vulnerabilities, ensuring a more secure networking environment.
