CVE-2020-16952
Overview
This vulnerability is a remote code execution flaw caused by improper validation of the source markup in SharePoint application packages. The root cause lies in SharePoint's failure to correctly verify the integrity and origin of uploaded application package markup. The affected component is the SharePoint application package processing mechanism within Microsoft SharePoint Enterprise Server 2016 and related SharePoint versions.
Vulnerability Description
<p>A remote code execution vulnerability exists in Microsoft SharePoint when the software fails to check the source markup of an application package. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could run arbitrary code in the context of the SharePoint application pool and the SharePoint server farm account.</p> <p>Exploitation of this vulnerability requires that a user uploads a specially crafted SharePoint application package to an affected version of SharePoint.</p> <p>The security update addresses the vulnerability by correcting how SharePoint checks the source markup of application packages.</p>
Impact
An attacker can execute arbitrary code remotely within the SharePoint application pool and server farm account context by uploading a malicious application package. No authentication or user interaction is required, as indicated by the CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N). Successful exploitation can lead to full compromise of the SharePoint server environment, enabling data access, modification, or service disruption within the affected infrastructure.
Solution
Apply the security update provided by Microsoft as detailed in their security advisory at https://portal.msrc.microsoft.com/en-US/security-guidance/advisory/CVE-2020-16952. This update addresses the vulnerability in Microsoft SharePoint Enterprise Server 2016 and related versions by correcting the application package markup validation process. Administrators should prioritize deployment of this patch to affected SharePoint installations to mitigate the risk.
