CVE-2020-15252
Overview
This vulnerability is a code injection flaw rooted in improper access control within the XWiki platform's scripting permissions. Specifically, users granted the SCRIPT right (or EDIT right in versions before 7.4) can access the Servlet context of the application server. This context exposes internal tools that enable instantiation of arbitrary Java objects and invocation of their methods, bypassing intended security restrictions on server-side object manipulation.
Vulnerability Description
In XWiki before version 12.5 and 11.10.6, any user with SCRIPT right (EDIT right before XWiki 7.4) can gain access to the application server Servlet context which contains tools allowing to instantiate arbitrary Java objects and invoke methods that may lead to arbitrary code execution. This is patched in XWiki 12.5 and XWiki 11.10.6.
Impact
An attacker with authenticated access and SCRIPT or EDIT rights can execute arbitrary code on the application server, potentially leading to full system compromise. The vulnerability requires low privileges (PR:L) but no user interaction (UI:N) and is exploitable over the network (AV:N). This enables lateral movement or data exfiltration within the affected environment, severely impacting confidentiality, integrity, and availability (C:H/I:H/A:H) of the system.
Solution
Upgrade XWiki to version 12.5 or later, or 11.10.6 or later, as these versions contain patches that restrict access to the Servlet context and prevent arbitrary object instantiation. Refer to the official GitHub advisory GHSA-5hv6-mh8q-q9v8 and Jira tickets XWIKI-17141 and XWIKI-17423 for detailed patch instructions and vendor recommendations.
EPSS vs KEV Prediction — Evolution (30 days)
Full Analysis
The vulnerability in XWiki prior to version 12.5 and 11.10.6 is a critical security flaw that allows users with specific rights to access the application server's Servlet context. This context is a powerful component of Java web applications, providing access to various tools and resources. In this case, users with SCRIPT rights (or EDIT rights in versions prior to 7.4) can exploit this vulnerability to instantiate arbitrary Java objects and invoke methods, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution. This capability poses a significant threat, as it allows attackers to execute malicious code within the server environment, compromising the integrity and confidentiality of the application and its data.
Exploitation of this vulnerability can occur through several attack vectors. An attacker with the requisite permissions can craft malicious scripts that leverage the exposed functionality to execute arbitrary code. For instance, an attacker could create a script that instantiates a Java object designed to perform unauthorized actions, such as accessing sensitive data, modifying application behavior, or even launching further attacks on the underlying infrastructure. The ease of exploitation, combined with the potential for severe consequences, makes this vulnerability particularly dangerous, especially in environments where users with SCRIPT rights are not closely monitored.
The real-world impact of this vulnerability can be profound, especially for organizations that rely on XWiki for critical operations. If an attacker successfully exploits this flaw, they could gain control over the application server, leading to data breaches, loss of sensitive information, and disruption of services. The business risks associated with such an incident include reputational damage, regulatory penalties, and financial losses stemming from recovery efforts and potential legal actions. Furthermore, the ability to execute arbitrary code could allow attackers to pivot to other systems within the network, expanding the scope of the compromise and increasing the overall risk to the organization.
To detect and mitigate this vulnerability, organizations should implement a multi-faceted approach. First, it is essential to ensure that all instances of XWiki are updated to the latest versions, as patches have been released to address this issue. Regularly reviewing user permissions is also critical; organizations should limit SCRIPT rights to only those users who absolutely require them, thereby reducing the attack surface. Additionally, employing application security tools that can monitor for unusual script execution patterns or unauthorized access attempts can help in early detection of exploitation attempts. Regular security audits and penetration testing can further enhance an organization's ability to identify and remediate vulnerabilities before they can be exploited.
In conclusion, the vulnerability present in XWiki versions prior to 12.5 and 11.10.6 represents a significant security risk due to its potential for arbitrary code execution. The combination of easy exploitation and severe consequences necessitates immediate attention from organizations using this platform. By implementing robust detection and mitigation strategies, organizations can protect themselves from the risks associated with this vulnerability and ensure the integrity of their applications and data.
CSURFACE threat intelligence has detected a moderate increase in the Exploit Prediction Scoring System (EPSS) score for CVE-2020-15252, rising by approximately 19% to a current value that places it near the upper quartile of vulnerability exploitation likelihood. This upward trend, although not rapid, indicates growing interest or potential preparatory activity by threat actors targeting XWiki instances vulnerable to arbitrary code execution via the SCRIPT right. Despite the absence of newly reported exploit techniques or active campaigns in our telemetry, the incremental rise in EPSS suggests that exploitation attempts may become more frequent or successful in the near term. For defenders, this subtle shift underscores the need to maintain vigilance and prioritize patching efforts, as the vulnerability’s high severity combined with increasing exploitation probability elevates its risk profile. Consequently, the threat level associated with CVE-2020-15252 should be considered heightened, reflecting a more active exploitation environment even in the absence of explicit new exploit disclosures.
