CVE-2020-10189
Overview
This vulnerability is a Java deserialization flaw occurring in Zoho ManageEngine Desktop Central versions prior to 10.0.474. The root cause lies in the unsafe deserialization of untrusted data within the getChartImage method of the FileStorage class. The flaw is triggered through the CewolfServlet and MDMLogUploaderServlet components, which process serialized objects without proper validation or sanitization.
Vulnerability Description
Zoho ManageEngine Desktop Central before 10.0.474 allows remote code execution because of deserialization of untrusted data in getChartImage in the FileStorage class. This is related to the CewolfServlet and MDMLogUploaderServlet servlets.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can leverage this flaw to execute arbitrary code on the affected server, resulting in full system compromise. This includes the ability to run commands remotely, access sensitive data, and control all managed endpoints within the Desktop Central environment. The lack of authentication or user interaction requirements significantly lowers the barrier for exploitation, increasing the risk of widespread operational disruption and data breaches.
Solution
Users should upgrade Zoho ManageEngine Desktop Central to version 10.0.474 or later, as detailed in the vendor advisory at https://www.manageengine.com/products/desktop-central/remote-code-execution-vulnerability.html. This update addresses the deserialization issue by implementing proper input validation. Administrators are advised to follow the patching instructions provided in the official advisory to ensure complete remediation of the vulnerability.
