CVE-2020-0646
Overview
This vulnerability is a remote code execution flaw caused by improper input validation within the Microsoft .NET Framework's handling of certain data. Specifically, the framework fails to correctly sanitize or validate input parameters in components related to workflow and serialization processing. The affected components include multiple versions of the .NET Framework, where this flaw enables injection of malicious code during input parsing.
Vulnerability Description
A remote code execution vulnerability exists when the Microsoft .NET Framework fails to validate input properly, aka '.NET Framework Remote Code Execution Injection Vulnerability'.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can remotely execute arbitrary code on systems running vulnerable .NET Framework versions by sending crafted inputs, leading to full system compromise. This enables attackers to run malicious commands, install programs, or manipulate data with the privileges of the affected application. The vulnerability requires no user interaction and can be exploited over the network, posing a critical threat to confidentiality, integrity, and availability of affected systems.
Solution
Microsoft has released security updates addressing this vulnerability in the .NET Framework versions 4.6 through 4.7.2, detailed in their security advisory available at https://portal.msrc.microsoft.com/en-US/security-guidance/advisory/CVE-2020-0646. Administrators should apply the corresponding patches as per the advisory instructions. No specific workarounds are recommended beyond applying the official updates to mitigate this issue.
